This position will be located in our new site at Metro Atlanta. We are looking for a Research Scientist to develop novel coating materials for compostable food packaging products. ResponsibilitiesResearch and develop novel compostable coating materials for ligno-cellulosic, polysaccharides or other natural substrates to provide oxygen/water/oil barrier properties.Conduct research independently (from the conception and planning to execution of a research idea) and also function as a part of teamOrganize and co-ordinate the lab to manufacturing processMaintain and expand the knowledge of coating materials development in an interdisciplinary fieldKeep up with scientific and patent literature and apply these to researchCommunicate ideas, results, opportunities and recommendations to internal stakeholders Communicate findings for IP development and transfer solutions to production together with engineers and scientistsManage general laboratory maintenance and logisticsRequirements: Experience RequirementsExperience with moisture/gas barrier coatings for natural substrates.Experience with the development of compostable coatings using polysaccharides, proteins, lipids, ligno-cellulosic, inorganic materials or their composites and blends Experience with surface chemistry and modifications of food packaging materialsExperience with the methodology and equipment used for coating materials in food packaging - dispersion, emulsification, film extrusion, lamination, gravure coating, plasma coating, spray coating, dip coating, vapor deposition etc.Experience with relevant testing and analytical methodsExperience with applied research to produce products and materials for market salesExperience working with process engineers and manufacturing engineers to scale up lab processes to pilot and full-scale production. QualificationsPhD in science or engineering with 4+ years of relevant experience in surface chemistry and coatings technology for food packaging Expertise in organic chemistry, paper coating, food science (coatings for fruits and vegetables) and polymer science (laminates and surface modifications) are highly encouraged to apply.Preparation of reports, patents and manuscriptsStrong verbal and written communication skillsHands on and resourceful in accessing information, materials, chemicals, equipment needed for research.
