Position Summary:Thousands of children need extra help to read at grade level. Take action as a tutor because kids who are strong readers by the end of 3rd grade are positioned to be strong learners for the rest of their lives.As a Reading Tutor, you'll be placed at a local school where you'll help students in kindergarten through third grade to become better readers. Every day, you'll meet with students one-on-one or in small groups to provide extra practice and build skills.With training and on-site coaching, we'll prepare you to help kids succeed. Students make the most progress when you are there, so our tutors serve during school hours and are needed for the entire school year. We are currently recruiting tutors for the 2022-23 school year, with the option of beginning in August, October or January.This is an AmeriCorps member position with Reading Corps and you'll be joining a team of nearly 2,000 tutors nationwide. Together, we're on a mission because kids who read have the power to succeed!What to Expect:Use proven strategies to help students build their skills and confidence.Collaborate with coaches to monitor student progress and see what's working.Conduct skill assessments and enter student scores into data management software.Commit to continuous improvement through coaching, training and professional development.Represent Reading Corps at school-sponsored activities and share your experience with the wider community to help build awareness.Perks Package:Give your time as a tutor beginning in August or October and receive a perks package at 35 hours a week that includes:A stipend of $900 paid every 2 weeks$18,900 total for 1200 hours of service starting in August 2022$14,400 total for 900 hours of service starting in October 2022Up to $4,546 for tuition or student loans Federal student loan forbearance and interest repaymentIndividual health insurance - Monthly premium 100% coveredChild care assistance - Based on family size and incomeGive your time as a tutor beginning in January and receive a perks package at 32 hours a week that includes:A stipend of $850 paid every 2 weeks$8,500 total for 500 hours of service starting in January 2023Up to $1,718 for tuition or student loans Federal student loan forbearance and interest repaymentIndividual health insurance - Monthly premium 100% coveredChild care assistance - Based on family size and income The Segal AmeriCorps Education Award can be used to pay tuition or repay qualified student loans. Individuals 55+ may gift their award to their child, grandchild, foster child, or stepchild.What it Takes:Reading Corps takes ordinary people and trains them to be great tutors. Anyone can become a tutor as long as they have a passion to take action for kids - and meet the following minimum qualifications. By the time they begin their service, our tutors are:Dependable and have a history of good attendanceAble to understand and follow instructionsCapable of setting a pace and maintaining a schedule with studentsCompetent with basic computer skills (like email and navigating online)Fluent in English for speaking, reading, and writing18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalentA citizen, national, or lawful permanent resident of the United States Able to successfully complete a background check Applicants who have received deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security are not eligible to serve as AmeriCorps members at this time.Want to Learn More?: Watch this 2-minute video and get a glimpse of what it's like to be a tutor!
