Job Title: Surgical Technologist Profession: Surgical Tech Specialty: Surgical Techs Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Day Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Required experience in CVOR License: Certified Surgical Technologist Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS) Must-Have: National certification Description: The Surgical Technologist functions under the direction of the registered professional nurse. Assists the healthcare team in providing safe, age-appropriate, and culturally aware patient care. Possesses the knowledge, skill, and ability to perform duties within the context of moderate to high acuity surgical cases. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon and other members of the healthcare team. Exhibits an acquisition of additional surgical skills for progressively more difficult cases. Demonstrates an efficient, organized surgical plan for assigned cases. Initiates discussions about the surgical plan with other members of the healthcare team. Able to troubleshoot instruments and equipment. Anticipates any additional supplies or equipment required for procedures. Ability to mentor, precept, or train in various modalities. Participates in performance improvement initiatives. Duties include preparation of the operative suite and surgical field to ensure a safe patient care environment. Maintains the sterile field and addresses other patient safety concerns. Gathers required instruments and supplies and serves as a surgical assistant as needed. Assists with inventory, ordering, and stocking of surgical areas. Ensures compliance with standards at all times. Call or late coverage may be required related to the facility. Checks supplies and equipment needed for surgical procedures. Assists with room setup, including opening sterile supplies. Sets up the sterile table with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications for procedures. Performs appropriate surgical counts with the circulator. Actively participates in the procedure pause/time-out. Scrubs, gowns, and gloves; gowns and gloves for the surgeon and assistants. Assists in draping the sterile field. Passes instruments to the surgeon during the procedure. Maintains an organized back table and operative field. Anticipates and offers suggestions to the surgeon throughout the procedure. Maintains the highest standard of sterile technique during procedures. Prepares sterile dressings. Actively participates in the post-procedure pause, ensuring proper handling of specimens. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Applies principles of asepsis to ensure prevention of infection and safety of patients and employees. Prepares case carts according to procedures and preference cards. Observes patients' conditions and reports any changes to the physician and registered nurse. Plans for next steps in the procedure as needed, adapting to emergencies. Prepares the OR room and other areas for receiving patients. Maintains financial stewardship related to supplies and equipment. Provides relationship-based patient-centered care that is consistent with population-specific characteristics. Partners with the patient by verifying procedures and conducting bedside shift reports. Practices using current clinical standards under supervision. Upholds all organizational policies and procedures, including legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements. Supports evidence-based practice and ethical accountability. Demonstrates teamwork and collaboration, promoting recruitment and retention of team members. Serves as a patient advocate, including patient care and safety. Assists other team members with cleaning and preparing rooms for the next patient. Assists in transporting patients and provides comfort and safety measures. Participates in performance improvement initiatives and seeks opportunities for process improvement. Maintains a positive attitude and flexibility in assignments. Completes all initial and annual competencies and participates in educational activities. Provides a positive learning environment for students and new hires. Participates in training related to new policies or equipment. Retains new information and implements new processes or technology. Maintains organization and cleanliness of surgical areas. Assumes responsibility for other duties as assigned.
