Job Description:
Responsibilities
Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
Requisition
On behalf of Wellstar's Behavioral Health Service Line, the
Wellstar Medical Group is pleased to open recruitment for a new
psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) at WellStar
Cobb Hospital in Austell, GA . Located in Austell, Georgia,
WellStar Cobb Hospital is emerging as a Center of Excellence for
Behavioral Health, offering an array of on-site behavioral health
programs, including a consultation-liaison service for
medically-admitted patients with primary or co-occurring
psychiatric disorders, a rapid assessment interface discharge
(RAID) behavioral health team providing care for patients in the
Cobb Emergency Department, a 32-bed adult inpatient psychiatric
unit, and an outpatient behavioral health clinic.
The PMHNP filling this new role will work within an integrated
behavioral health care model, working collaboratively with our team
of psychiatrists, PMHNPs, and other behavioral health clinicians to
proactively meet patient needs. Whereas the entire Cobb behavioral
health team collaborates to meet the overarching behavioral health
needs of Wellstar Cobb hospital and the surrounding community, the
primary setting in which the PMHNP will work will be a new
outpatient Behavioral Health clinic, located on the Wellstar Cobb
Hospital campus.
Outpatient Behavioral Health Clinic : This is a new
multi-disciplinary behavioral health clinic that will be staffed
with physician colleagues, a psychologist, and a licensed clinical
social worker. In this setting, the PMHNP maintains a caseload of
adult patients with psychiatric and substance use disorders. (S)he
provides initial diagnostic interviews, sees patients for follow-up
visits, establishes treatment plans, prescribes psychotropic
medications, administers long-acting injectables, and documents the
plan of care via Epic, Wellstar's electronic medical record. Aims
of this clinic include the following:
Whereas the PMHNP will primarily support outpatient psychiatric
needs, the PHMNP is a team-oriented clinician. As such, on occasion
when staffing needs arise, (s)he will also work in other settings
(e.g., Cobb Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit; Emergency Department)
to help support overall program needs. Although secondary to
her/his primary work setting, descriptions are provided below to
help with the broader context.
Emergency Department : As a member of the Rapid Assessment
Interface Discharge (RAID) team, PMHNP assists in addressing the
needs of the Wellstar Cobb Emergency Department. In this setting,
PMHNPs proactively evaluate and initiate treatment for patients
presenting with psychiatric and substance use disorders. They
participate in daily treatment rounds with the inpatient
psychiatric team and work with ED Medical Staff and Behavioral
Health Resource Team members (e.g., Masters-level therapists and
case managers) to make determinations regarding the need to execute
or rescind involuntary holds, to initiate pharmacological
treatments in the ED, and/or to recommend other treatments, as
necessary. Aims of this service include the following:
Inpatient Behavioral Health Unit : WellStar Cobb's Inpatient
Behavioral Health Unit is a 32-bed general adult psychiatric unit,
serving a moderate-to-high acuity patient population. Patients
admitted to the Cobb unit are adults ages 18 and above with
psychiatric, substance use, and dual diagnosis disorders.
Responsibilities of the PMHNP in this setting include attending
daily treatment rounds, developing treatment plans, issuing
admission and discharge orders, prescribing psychotropic
medications, and working with a multi-disciplinary team to ensure
the highest quality and safest care for our patients.
Skills Needed:
The PMHNP should possess excellent diagnostic skills, able to
conceptualize patients possessing a range of psychiatric
presentations. The ability to communicate clearly - both verbally
and in writing - is necessary to work effectively with other
members of the Medical Staff and behavioral health teams and to
educate patients and family members alike. The PMHNP should have
knowledge of best practice treatment approaches in the management
of moderate to severe mental illness, as well as discretion of when
to seek additional consultation with peers and clinical supervisors
as needed. (S)he should be comfortable managing psychiatric crises,
maintaining a calm demeanor and excellent judgment should such
situations arise. Further, the PMHNP should understand the
bidirectional relationship between physical and mental health and
how social determinants of health interfere with optimal
outcomes.
