Responsibilities

Under the direction of the Manger of Medical Interpretation, the PRN Medical Interpreter supports the
operations of the department and health system by providing consecutive, simultaneous, and sight
translation interpretation to patients and their caregivers with Limited English Proficiency (LEP).
Interpretation may be provided for inpatient, ambulatory and emergency situations and serves to enhance
patient and caregiver understanding of medical procedures, treatment options, discharge instructions,
education and follow-up care. The incumbent relays medical information between speakers of two different
languages in compliance with all office and hospital policies and procedures, particularly relating to patient
confidentiality and informed consent. The PRN Medical Interpreter is expected to abide by all published
Medical Interpreting Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics as developed by the National Council on
Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC). The PRN Medical Interpreter will promote the appropriate utilization of
language access services at WellStar, as mandated by regulatory and accreditation bodies via, in-person,
over the phone and/or video interpretation. Other duties related incidental to the work described will also be
performed. This is a variable shift position reporting to different facilities within Wellstar Health System.
Competencies in both English and target/source language will be evaluated

Qualifications

Required Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Bachelor's degree or equivalent preferred.

Proof of medical interpreter training - minimum of 40 hours.

Required Minimum Experience: Minimum 1 year of experience in a healthcare setting as a medical interpreter with strong medical vocabulary preferred.

Required Minimum Certification: Certification: Must provide proof of a 40-hour medical interpreter training certificate, such as "Bridging the Gap" or other comparable training and passing score on interpreter proficiency assessment.

National Medical Interpreter Certification strongly recommended.

Required Minimum Skills:
Computer/data entry experience. Ability to communicate with various members of the healthcare team.

Ability to use EXCEL, Word and have basic computer operational knowledge. Epic and 3M experience preferred.
