The Director, Supply Chain Operations is responsible for the development and successful implementation of a dynamic and responsive supply chain delivery organization that provides first-class service to all customers. Under the leadership of the Director, Supply Chain Operations, the supply chain team will ensure system requirements are leveraged to capture optimal quality, price and service for all member organizations.
The Director, Supply Chain Operations will manage home office staff as well as member organization-based regional supply chain leaders. -This position will have system-wide responsibility for all supply chain activities and will deliver services through a management team that is a combination of system-based and member organization-based employees.
In addition to developing and managing the strategic supply chain for the system, the Director, Supply Chain Operations is responsible for reducing and controlling product/service costs, reducing and controlling transaction and logistics costs (warehousing, purchasing, etc.), providing world-class sourcing services, improving the quality of procured products and services and identifying, analyzing and implementing sourcing opportunities. This includes, but is not limited to, the identification of strategic sourcing opportunities for products and equipment, management and optimization of system-wide supplier relationships and performance and research/entry into new product and service offerings where appropriate.
If you are located within commutable distance from Bangor or Portland, Maine, you will have the flexibility to work remotely*, as well as work in the office as you take on some tough challenges
Primary Skills:


  • Be an expert negotiator. Able to facilitate a collaborative process with internal and external negotiation teams and negotiate product and service contracts at an advanced level
  • Detailed knowledge of healthcare products, equipment, services and customer requirements
  • Develop metrics (specifically cost variance and supplier control metrics), methods and procedures which drive results across the system, promoting best practices for supply chain
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate and gain consensus at all levels
  • Be able to manage multiple projects and effectively deal with a fast-paced and changing environment
  • Solid working knowledge of warehousing operations and supply chain logistics
  • Value relationship building and collaboration. Must be able to interact in a professional, positive and ethical manner with all levels of the organization, physicians and the supplier community
  • Be experienced in change management techniques
  • Demonstrate ownership and accountability. Delegates effectively and holds others accountable
  • Understand business models used by group purchasing organizations (GPOs) and distributors
  • Working knowledge of how to implement and leverage supply chain systems
  • Develop and execute a supply chain strategy, identifying and implementing best in class supply chain technology. Develop a "metric-driven" environment in which efficiencies and best practices are defined and applied throughout the system
  • Develop policies that support supply chain strategies
  • Develop acquisition and procurement standards for products and in-scope services
  • Establish critical measures that control the performance of the supply chain through the management of purchase price variance, new product usage and on time delivery. - Develop supplier performance measures that are communicated to member organizations and take appropriate actions against underperforming suppliers
  • Lead strategic procurement efforts for all system members
  • Continually advance process improvement initiatives and programs
  • Design and execute supplier qualification and business review processes
  • Work closely with system leadership to build procurement influence and set procurement policy/direction
  • Develop and/or refine contracts and procurement process and policies to ensure adherence to the system's business principles, industry best practices, performance control, ethics and professional standards
  • Build relationships with key suppliers and logistics partners to achieve strategic relationships, create opportunities for positive incentives and maximize value-added services
  • Drive group purchasing organization contracts to meet the ever-changing volume and product requirements of the enterprise
  • Document system-wide cost savings and prioritize future opportunities for supply cost reductions and/or improved operational control and efficiency
  • Meet regularly with member organization leadership to ensure expectations and quality standards are being met. - Ensure member organizations understand and leverage other best practice supply chain operations
  • Lead a team of managers in effectively delivering strategic services across all categories of spend, including but not limited to medical-surgical supplies, medical equipment, office supplies, facilities, distribution and other professional services
  • Forecast supply requirements, trends, and variances; align resources to ensure continuity of supply; develop action plans and initiate corrective actions to minimize the impact of supply disruptions and cost variances
  • Measure internal performance attributes such as customer service, product quality, supplier performance, and goal attainment
  • Serve as direct interface with legal counsel (internal and external)
  • Assure sourcing protocols are administered in accordance with system policies
  • Promote relations with all levels including nursing staff, physicians, support personnel, administration and other departments
  • Develop and manage operating budget for the department
  • Attend required meetings and participate on committees as required/requested
  • Mentor managers and facilitate succession planning
  • Develop department staff via ongoing in-service education, on-the-job training, evaluations and open departmental meetings. Establish a professional training and development program to ensure technical competency of staff and keep pace with changing technology
  • Perform other duties as assigned

    • Bachelor's degree
    • Strategic sourcing and procurement professional with 10+ years of leadership experience in hospital supply chain management
    • People management experience
    • Executive-level presentation experience
    • Experience managing through strategic shift or redirection
    • Project management skills - experience managing multiple projects, people and constituents
    • Demonstrated analytical skills
    • Influenza/Flu vaccine

      • Master of Business Administration or Master of Health Administration
      • Experience in hospital management and/or leading complex supply chain operations consulting engagements
