The AVP will lead nine RAS Unit directors and two RAS Central directors in supporting Emory's research goals through providing best-in-class delivery of research administration services. The AVP will partner with administration, faculty, and research administrative staff in furthering quality research across campus and serve as the face of research administration services across the campus. The AVP will function in a highly collaborative and inclusive fashion, working with University leadership to effectively meet the growing needs of the research enterprise. The AVP will continue to nurture and promote a culture of high-quality service to researchers, administrators, and staff that will enhance their productivity, while guaranteeing adherence to relevant regulations. JOB DESCRIPTION:

  • The AVP is responsible for fostering strong, mutually beneficial relationships with Chief Business Officers and faculty in the academic units as well as the AVP for Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs and the AVP for Research Grants and Contracts.
  • The AVP will coordinate closely with staff and leadership to review and improve business practices; assess current systems and implement improvements as needed; provide action-oriented and expert support to academic units; and participate in the development of enhanced research policies and procedures.
  • The AVP is responsible for the assignment of resources within and across the RAS Units and will address challenges facing RAS individual or collective units.
  • The AVP will develop relevant metrics designed to measure efficiency, effectiveness, and growth, which can be used for reporting and strategic purposes. OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES

    Build and maintain collaborative partnerships with internal academic partner units and relevant administrative units:
    • The AVP will need to operate effectively with faculty researchers, senior managers, administrators, and research staff members to facilitate communication, resolve problems, and enhance working relationships.
    • This person will understand that RAS is the faculty facing interface of the university and will offer collaboration and customer service to sustain productive faculty partnerships.
    • The AVP will ensure the involvement of stakeholders in policy and operational decision-making, and influence, not authority, is most frequently required.
    • The AVP will build strong working relationships with key internal partners through open, direct, and transparent communication.
    • The AVP will negotiate with and resolve conflict among various groups and individuals with diverse backgrounds and goals concerning sensitive issues.
    • The AVP will support the VPRA and the Senior Vice President for Research (SVPR) on their ongoing business and process improvement initiatives and their strategic planning goals for ORA.
    • This individual will be involved in the launch of the "One ORA" initiative, inspired by and created from the "One Emory" project. "One ORA" aims to eliminate silos, centralize on-boarding processes, improve use of common systems, and unite the departments within ORA.
    • This person will continue to champion the critical work and services of the RAS throughout the academic units, while also creating improved organization and structure. Recruit new and develop existing research administration staff:
      • The AVP will work closely with staff and the Emory ORA department of strategic operations and training to provide the necessary training and development to keep pace with innovations in research administration.
      • Together with the human resource staff and partners within each unit, the AVP must set performance standards, assess training, development, and education needs, and ensure that the competencies are consistent with the scope of work required to be successful.
      • The AVP is responsible for the management and growth of a high performing team whose work is defined by quality, timeliness, and responsiveness to the needs of faculty researchers, Chief Business Officers (CBOs), and by compliance with federal and institutional policy.
      • The AVP will leverage the skills and expertise of the team, provide opportunities for ongoing professional development, and make strategic decisions about staffing models, including filling vacant positions.
      • The AVP will inspire their eleven direct reports and departments to accomplish RAS' missions, goals, and strategic plans.
      • This is an opportunity for someone with a keen interest in mentorship, management, and visionary leadership. Assess and streamline technology and implement changes to increase efficiencies:
        • The AVP will need to analyze the existing processes and systems within RAS and work closely with the CBOs, research administrators, and researchers to improve processes to provide maximum benefit to the research units.
        • The AVP will help determine what technological enhancements will make the greatest positive impact on the research enterprise and then work with other appropriate individuals and departments to acquire and implement such technology.
        • They will have the opportunity to lead system improvements that will eliminate redundancies, provide efficiencies, and enhance the integrity of the data. Establish a culture of operational excellence, high quality service and accountability, and responsiveness within the RAS:
          • The AVP must understand the value, importance, and challenges of supporting world class researchers while meeting the complex regulatory requirements of a research university.
          • This individual will bring experience with research organizations that prepares them to provide a vision to address the structural challenges facing tier one research institutions.
          • In a decentralized environment, the AVP will ensure that the necessary structures and resources are in place to support all the units and empower leadership and staff to be an agile and effective team.
          • The AVP will be seen as an enabler of new ideas and directions, promoting, and incentivizing major cross-disciplinary research initiatives and ensuring that faculty across Emory are well-supported in their scholarly endeavors at small- and large-scales.
          • The AVP will continue to build the infrastructure of the office, through creating better organization and structure, supporting the elimination of research silos. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
            • A master's degree, preferably in Business, and ten years of experience, including several years of managing teams of employees and processes in a related complex work environment OR an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
            • Experience with shared service centers or similar service oriented structures preferred and preference will be given to those who have demonstrated successful performance in such an environment.
            • Some preference will be given to individuals with familiarity with research administration experience, including but not limited to proposal development/submission, grant and contract servicing, and post-award financial management in a research intensive university, academic health center, contracting organization, or other research environment.
            • Knowledge of relevant OMB Circulars, sponsored award accounting, and PeopleSoft ERM systems preferred.
            • Other desirable qualifications include proven ability to manage multiple teams effectively; experience in process development and redesign, including leading change and influencing stakeholders to bring about process improvements; proven ability to build relationships across multiple constituency groups; demonstrated results oriented performance, and proven ability to communicate effectively with senior leaders. THE SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATE: Emory seeks a highly qualified, collaborative individual with in-depth experience working in research administration, including pre-award and post-award facilitated in a complex higher education environment. The incumbent will have strategic leadership experience in a fast-paced, customer service-oriented setting. The successful candidate will bring many of the following skills and qualities:
              • Experience in leading research administration or sponsored programs, including pre-award and post award activities, at an academic or healthcare institution of similar size or complexity
              • A proven track record of providing visionary leadership, as well as effective management of a complex organization within the context of a large university or comparable public or private sector research organization
              • A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion, with a track record of implementing strategies and programs that attract, provide support for, and retain constituencies from diverse backgrounds to research environment;
              • A demonstrated ability to lead complex organizational processes effectively and to nurture a culture that is in service of and support to the research and entrepreneurial efforts of faculty
              • Excellent skills in communicating to a wide range of audiences, including listening to a broad array of stakeholders
              • The highest level of personal integrity, courage to address complex issues involving a variety of stakeholders with conflicting needs
              • Knowledge and understanding of the current legislative, regulatory, and public policy environment impacting research
              • Ability to build, motivate, and supervise a team, including organizing workflow to accomplish objectives, identifying training needs and opportunities, developing incentives, and building performance management systems
              • Ability to lead through influence and persuasion
              • Active listening and building trust across various constituent groups
              • Proactively identify and respond to the emerging challenges in the field of research administration with involvement with relevant national organizations NOTE: Position tasks are generally required to be performed in-person at an Emory University location.
