Job Description:
JOB SUMMARY:
Performs difficult skilled mechanical work in maintenance and
repair of motor graders, backhoes, tractors, bulldozers, loaders,
and other heavy construction equipment, including diagnosis, repair
and preventive maintenance activities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Performs complex skilled mechanic work in repairing and overhauling
diesel engines, transmissions and axels on heavy construction
equipment; repairing hydraulic lines, hoses, pumps and cylinders;
and repairing electrical and fuel systems.
Performs routine scheduled preventive maintenance on vehicles,
including tune-ups, changing oil and filters, changing air filters,
balancing and rotating tires, checking and filling transmission and
brake fluids.
Operates test equipment in detecting mechanical defects in
equipment.
Makes decisions determining repair or replacement of defective
units or related parts.
Installs and repairs dump bodies; may customize vehicles to include
installing and repairing lights, sirens, spotlights, cages and
decals on emergency vehicles, or constructing truck beds for
specialized use; welds and completes all types of metal
fabrication.
May perform skilled mechanic work in repair and maintenance of
automobiles and trucks.
Travels to job sites to diagnose and/or repair equipment or perform
routine maintenance activities.
Obtains and delivers parts as required.
Completes and signs work orders and cleans work area.
May perform repairs and maintain 50 small air-cooled engines,
weed-eaters, lawnmowers and edgers.
May be required to oversee a work detail of inmates from the
correctional center, assuring their safety and security at all
times.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education and Experience:
High School or vocational school diploma or G.E.D. supplemented
with coursework in auto mechanics.
Three years mechanical experience.
Any equivalent combination of education and experience which
provides the minimum level of qualifications stated above.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid Class A Driver's License depending on assigned vehicle and a
satisfactory Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
Minimum of five ASE Certifications - or obtained within first 12
months of employment
POST Certification required - or obtained within first 12
months
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of methods, practices and procedures for repairing,
overhauling and maintaining automobiles, trucks, and heavy
equipment.
Knowledge of and ability to perform automotive and heavy equipment
repair and maintenance.
Knowledge of and skill in welding.
Skill in use of hand tools.
Ability to operate diagnostic and test equipment and utilize test
results to determine mechanical defects and corrective
measures.
Ability to follow both oral and written instructions.
Ability to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
Ability to perform strenuous and routine work.

Physical Ability: Essential functions continuously require the
ability to remain in a stationary position (sitting or standing);
move oneself by walking about office or garage; repetitively use
hands/arms/legs; and move/transport items weighing up to 10lbs.
Incumbents must continuously think analytically; handle

details. Additionally, essential functions require the continuous
ability to be on call and work irregular hours; attend work related

Essential functions frequently require the ability to handle
confidential information.
Essential functions occasionally require the ability to bend body
downward and forward by bending spine and legs, twisting at the
waist, hips or knees; ascend and descend ladders, stairs, and
ramps; move oneself by crawling on hands and knees; reach overhead;
position oneself by crouching or kneeling; maintain body
equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or
navigating narrow, slippery or erratically moving surfaces; push or
pull items; move/transport items weighing between 11lbs and 100lbs.
Incumbents must occasionally use a keyboard or type.
Sensory Ability: Essential functions regularly require the ability
to use effective verbal and written communication; use hand/eye
coordination; fine manipulation to use tools and equipment; and
discriminate colors.
Environmental Factors: Essential functions are continuously
performed with exposure to risk of bodily injury from hazards
including chemical, electrical, sharp objects/tools and heavy
machinery; working in constricted spaces; dirt/mud, fumes, gasses,
odors, dust, grease and oil; moving mechanical parts; hot
temperature devices including burners and flame torches; vibration;
and wet, slippery floors and surfaces. Incumbents continuously work
with others or work alone.
Essential functions are frequently performed with exposure to
adverse environmental conditions including inclement weather;
extreme hot or cold temperatures; humidity and moisture.
Essential functions are occasionally performed with exposure to
risk of bodily injury from biological hazards; falling objects; and
falling from high heights/high places.
Incumbents regularly work around equipment and machinery; operate
vehicles; and walk on uneven ground.
