$47,320.00 General Description and Classification Standards:
Performs semi-skilled construction and/or maintenance work in
support of a wide variety of transportation work, street
construction, bridge and other related activities. Operates hand
and power tools, light to medium construction equipment, test, and
measurement equipment, etc. Generally, works as a part of a work
crew and work performed is at an experienced level. Work is
performed frequently in cooperation with skilled trades employees,
experienced equipment operators, technicians, or crew supervisors.
Supervision Received: Works under direct supervision and follows
standardized procedures and written instructions to accomplish
assigned tasks usually as part of a work crew. Decision Making:
Selects from multiple standardized procedures, written
instructions, and methods to accomplish assignments. Essential
Duties and Responsibilities: These are typical responsibilities for
this position and should not be construed as exclusive or all
inclusive. Completes assigned work orders in an efficient and
effective manner; works with supervisor to prioritize work orders;
works in a safe and organized manner to ensure safety for self,
crew and the public and to complete assignments correctly and on
time. Performs manual labor in support of construction,
maintenance, and upkeep projects; lifts, moves, loads, and unloads
materials, equipment, tools, furniture, and supplies; digs ditches,
trenches, and holes manually or utilizing power equipment; shovels,
rakes, spreads, compacts, and levels dirt, rock, asphalt, cement,
and other materials; retrieves supplies, materials, tools,
equipment and other items and runs various errands as needed;
collects and transports materials, supplies, tools, and equipment
to and from the worksite. Utilizes safety equipment and wears
protective gear; monitors work environment to ensure safety of
employees and other individuals; monitors traffic conditions
surrounding trucks/equipment to identify obstructions, pedestrians,
or unsafe traffic conditions; flags and directs traffic and places
markers, signs and cones around project/work site to ensure safety
of crew and the traveling public; and reports any incidents,
accidents, problems, or unusual situations. Performs various manual
tasks in support of street, roadway, drainage, solid waste
collections, and processing/disposal projects; installs and removes
sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and culverts; clears and repairs
ditches; clears drainage obstructions from culverts, ditches, and
gutters; lays and smooth asphalt; repairs asphalt and concrete;
patches/repairs potholes in road surfaces; compacts road surfaces
and packs ground materials; installs and repairs pipe; and installs
reflective markers in streets. Operates a variety of machinery,
equipment, and tools associated with department projects, which may
include pump, probing rod, tamper, jack hammer, lawn mower, riding
mower, edger, weed eater, leaf blower, chain saw, power saw, hand
saw, concrete saw, air compressor, pickaxe, sledgehammer, rake,
post hole digger, shovel, hand tools, measuring instruments, or
two-way radio. Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks
necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition, which
may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids,
refueling vehicles, performing minor equipment repairs, greasing
equipment, sharpening blades, replacing parts, washing/cleaning
equipment, or cleaning shop or work areas; monitors equipment
operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty
equipment. Gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies needed to
conduct work activities; ensures availability of adequate parts and
materials to conduct work activities; and initiates requests for
new or replacement materials as required. Prepares or completes
various forms, reports, correspondence, checklists, work orders,
service tickets, vehicle/equipment maintenance records, or other
documents. Maintains a safe and organized work area; stores tools;
collects scrap and leftover materials; blows debris from sidewalks.
Participates in occurrences designated as “Emergency Events” by
department Commissioner or Mayor in direct or expanded role. May
perform other duties as assigned. The above statements reflect the

list. Knowledge of department policies and procedures of methods,
products, tools, and equipment used in ATLDOT maintenance and
construction work of basic mathematical principles. Skill in
operating a variety of light to heavy power equipment; in
maintenance of tools and equipment. Ability to understand and apply
pertinent policies, procedures and regulations establish and
maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted
during the course of work perform maintenance activities involving
skills in the functional fields to which assigned; to maintain
records and make simple reports Work beyond normal working hours,
as required. Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience –
High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). 6 months
to a year of related experience in street construction and repair
or other related experience. Preferred Requirements – High school
diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) and 2 years of related
experience in transportation, road, bridge, construction and
repair, or other relevant experience. Licensures and Certifications
Valid driver’s license required; Commercial Driver’s License (CDL),
N Tanker Endorsement - desirable. ADA Compliance: Physical Ability:
Tasks involve the regular and sustained performance of moderately
physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of
climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and
crawling, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing,
and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50
pounds); may occasionally involve heavier objects and materials (up
to 100 pounds). Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the
ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors,
sounds, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some
tasks require the ability to communicate orally. Environmental
Factors: Tasks may require exposure to such environmental
conditions as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain,
fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations,
electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, violence,
disease, or pathogens.
